How many Google reviews do I need to rank on Maps?
The short answer. There is no fixed number. Google says local results are ranked on relevance, distance and prominence, and that your review count and rating are part of prominence, so more reviews and better ratings can help. The number that matters is the one held by the listings that show above yours for your main search, in your area.
What does Google say decides local ranking?
Google’s own guidance names three things. Relevance: how well your listing matches what was searched. Distance: how far you are from the person searching, or from the place they named. Prominence: how well known your business is. Your review count and your rating are part of prominence, and Google says more reviews and positive ratings can improve your local ranking. It publishes no number of reviews that guarantees a position. Read it in Google’s tips to improve your local ranking.
So how many Google reviews are enough?
Enough to match the listings that show above yours. Search for what your customers search, such as “salon near me” or “cake shop in Kothrud”, and note the review count and rating of the top three results on the map. That is your target. A café with 40 reviews on a street where the others have 400 has a long way to go. One with 40 where the others have 25 is already ahead.
How many 5 star reviews does it take to raise my rating?
Your rating is the average of every rating on your listing, so the reviews you already have hold it in place. The number of 5 star reviews you need is:
reviews you have × (target rating − current rating) ÷ (5 − target rating), rounded up.
- 30 reviews at 4.0, aiming for 4.5: 30 × 0.5 ÷ 0.5 = 30 more 5 star reviews.
- 120 reviews at 4.2, aiming for 4.5: 120 × 0.3 ÷ 0.5 = 72 more.
- 300 reviews at 4.0, aiming for 4.5: 300 more.
The free review calculator does this sum for you, and works out roughly how long it takes at a pace you choose.
Does the rating matter more than the number of reviews?
Both count, and customers read both. A perfect 5.0 from 7 reviews looks thin next to a 4.6 from 300. The number of reviews is also what protects the rating: one bad review takes 0.1 off a listing with 30 reviews and almost nothing off one with 300.
Do recent reviews matter?
Customers see the date on every review. A listing whose newest review is a year old looks quieter than it is, even with a good rating. A few reviews every week, from asking every customer, keeps the listing looking as busy as the shop is.
What else improves local ranking on Google Maps?
From the same Google guidance:
- Fill in the Business Profile completely: category, address, phone, website and hours.
- Verify the listing.
- Keep the opening hours right, including holidays.
- Add real photos of the shop and what you sell.
- Reply to reviews.
