How to ask for a Google review

Most customers would leave a review if somebody asked. Nobody asks, because it feels awkward. One line, said the same way to everybody, makes it ordinary. The plate does the rest.

What to say

Say it in the language the customer speaks to you, and point at the plate while you do.

When to ask

• When they payThey are standing still with a phone in their hand. This is the best moment there is.
• When the order is handed overThe bag, the receipt, the end of the appointment. Say thank you first, then ask.
• When someone says something kindThank them, and ask in the same words you use for everyone else. If you only ask the people who compliment you, you are choosing who reviews you, and Google counts that as selective asking.

A habit, not a target

Do not tell your team to bring in ten reviews a week. Google now forbids that, and it also makes people ask only the easy customers. What works is a small habit that lasts.

• Ask everyone the same way, in the language they speak to you.
• Point at the plate. You do not have to explain, they can tap or scan.
• Make it a habit for the whole shift, not a push for one week.

What Google does not allow

Google changed its review rules in April 2026. These four are what they mean at a counter.

• Do not set a number for your staffGoogle's rules now forbid asking staff to bring in a set number of reviews. A leaderboard or a bonus for reviews does the same harm.
• Do not ask for a name or for certain wordsGoogle's rules now forbid asking staff to get reviews that name a person or say something specific. Let customers write what they think.
• Do not offer anything in returnA discount, a free item or a lucky draw for a review is paying for it, even if the review is honest.
• Do not choose who to askAsking only the people who look happy, or sending unhappy ones somewhere else first, is what Google calls selective asking.
